About the Logical Volume Manager API
The Logical Volume Manager (LVM) is a fixed-disk (DASD)
partitioning program designed to replace older, more primitive systems such
as 'FDISK'. It provides many enhanced features, while still remaining
compatible with the traditional PC disk partitioning scheme.
The features provided by LVM include:
- Logical volumes spanning multiple partitions, even on physically
separate disks.
- Dynamic volume expansion (when using a file system that supports it).
- Drive letters for LVM-managed disk volumes are explicitly assigned by
the user, rather than being determined automatically by the operating
system, and may be changed at any time.
- Improved support for new file systems, including bootable file systems.
- On-demand repartitioning without requiring a system reboot.
- INT13X support to allow booting from partitions that extend past 1024
cylinders.
- Customizable logical volume and partition names up to twenty characters
in length.
This documentation describes the application programming interface of
LVM version 1, which is included in the following operating systems:
- OS/2 Warp Server for e-business (WSeb)
- Convenience Package (1 and 2) for OS/2 Warp Version 4
